ContactPigeon Glossary

As you're getting started on ContactPigeon, there are some common terms that are handy to know. Here's an overview of ContactPigeon basics.

C

Campaign A single, targeted email sent to a pre-established group of contacts.
Campaign Folder A folder refers to a group of campaigns. In ContactPigeon, you can use folders to organize, categorize and archive sent campaigns for easy access and comparison.
Contact A contact is defined as an unique email address within ContactPigeon.

E

Email Service Provider (ESP) A services or platform that can send commercial and transactional email on your behalf.

H

Hard Bounce Hard bounce occurs when an email cannot be delivered due to a permanent reason. This could be caused by a variety of reasons, including invalid email or a deliberate block by the email server. Emails experiencing a Hard Bounce will be automatically suppressed from all future email campaigns.

I

IP Address A unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identify each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.

L

List A list is a group of one or more contacts, identified by email. The contact list is a key component in your marketing campaign process as it forms the basis of campaign recipients.

S

Segment Segmentation is the practice of dividing a customer base into groups of individuals that are similar in specific ways relevant to marketing, such as age, gender, interests and spending habits. Hence, a segment refers to a group of contacts defined based on a set of criteria. In ContactPigeon, you can define segment criteria across multiple attributes from demographics to web behavior driven (e.g., pages viewed, emails open, clicks, etc.)
Soft Bounce Soft bounces typically indicate a temporary delivery issue to an email address. Some reason for soft bounces may be mail server offline, mailbox is full, or email exceeded acceptable size. Soft bounces are handled differently than hard bounces. ContactPigeon will allow soft bounces up to 7 times before turning the contact into the hard bounce status.
Suppressed (Suppression List) Status of an email once it unsubscribes from the mailing list, experiences hard bounces, or manually added to a suppression list. A suppressed contact is considered inactive in your account. When sending campaigns, ContactPigeon will automatically remove any suppressed contacts from the recipient list to ensure improved deliverability and compliance.

U

Unsubscribe Unsubscribe occurs when a contact on your list declines to receive further communications and has taken action by submitting a request to unsubscribe. CAN-SPAM and other anti-spam laws require all campaign emails (non-transaction) to have an unsubscribe process in place. Read more here on how to add an unsubscribe link.
UTM UTM code (or parameter) is a piece of text added in a typical URL that helps you identify from where traffic to your website comes from. By setting a unique UTM, you can start tracking how your campaign performs using Google Analytics. Learn more.

W

Web Version URL An URL link to a web version of your campaign for your recipients. Read more to learn how to set it up.
